Straining The Web

Net Sieve

Never Seen This One Before

Latest spam that has me scratching my head:

“best search engine resource to buy people on a site”

The words “buy people on a site” were the hyperlink. It was a .ru domain so I’m hoping it was just a matter of faulty English. Although … I’m sure I could always find good use for a Russian bride. Damn my fast finger on the delete button!

Dang – Da Nang

Wow, Da Nang has come out with some kicking clothes for kids. I would have killed for a pair of these adobe cargo pants when I was trying on my cool.

Not to mention the Rock & Republic jeans. Should kids really be this fashionable? Now I not only have to keep up with Prince and Jessica Alba, I gotta glare at the little third-grader down the street for out-dressing me?

I’m telling!

This Is Ultima

Now who was it that said, “If you don’t get off your butt and quit playing video games, you’ll never get anywhere!”? Uh, yeah. Take that.

Let’s hope Garriott’s view out the porthole (unihole?) sparks his imagination for future games. Lucky barstid.

Pardon Me?

You gotta love computer translation. The lovely German who put up this sweet bit of freeware called Free Number 1.0, kindly wanted to make it accessible to English speaking friends. Here’s what came of it:

“Away with the advertising garbage: Who leaves its genuine telephone number approximately for a classified advertisement, must on a tide unsolicited advertisement count: The combination of announcement and telephone number permits conclusions on the consumer behaviour of the advertiser. If for cases like these the free erhätliche service offers itself call number.”

It’s like poetry with a free download. I love the Internets.

Ask And You Shall Mac

Right on the heels of my earlier post about the dearth of Mac downloads on the Web comes this link to mac games you can pick up with the click of the mouse. Sweet. There’s not much info on the games, it’s a pretty bare bones site. Meaning you see a game you like, you click on it and it downloads.

I’m guessing most of the games in this database are OS X. Some are freeware, most seem to be shareware and most are between $10 and $20 bucks. There are more games than I expected … probably about 200 with lots of good choices for the young ones, too.

There’s something for everyone, so enjoy!

What To Do With Wine

OK, let the mocking commence for any and all reasons you find mock-worthy.

First off, there has never really been a problem in my house with leftover wine, but it’s best to be prepared you know. Second, yes, I do occasionally get tips from the Common Sense Community. (Whose link I’m not going to share because you’re being so mean. Go Google it or your own mean self.)

Anyway. In order not to waste a precious drop of wine do as my good friend Patti does:

“Freeze leftover wine in ice-cube trays and put them in freezer bags. When you need wine for sauces or casseroles, just pop in a cube or two. You can also make a quick, refreshing wine spritzer with a little soda water. Or, add wine cubes to your favorite party punch for a little pizzazz at your adult party!”

emphasis mine.

Freeware for Mac Classic

I have three Apple computers that I fire up all the time for personal use – not that personal, dang it, I’m not surfing p0rn – and all of them are pre-OS X. Call me stubborn or cheap or whatever, but I don’t want to upgrade. I have programs on each computer that I don’t think I can find any more and I don’t want to take the chance that their not compatible with whatever Tiger or Leopard or Meercat that Apple is up to now.

But just try to find freeware online for anything under X! It’s like as soon as X popped up, every site that had anything 9.x or under was wiped from the face of the Internet.

I’m not suggesting there’s a conspiracy here … wait, maybe there is. If I start writing every other post about the iPhone you’ll know they got to me. Ach, point is, I found one decent site: Version Tracker, but it’s not doing me right by graphics and audio ware.

Any help out there? Is there anyone else out there who’s cheap (read: broke) and stuck in the past (read: senseless updates are Evil)? Send me your links … please.

A Loan In the UK

I get a bit shaky when it comes to talking personal loans these days. So much hinky stuff is coming up in the news and you’re always hearing about people who lose their home and assets for a small loan that ballooned into a monster.

I say you can never do too much research before you sign on the line. In the UK, there’s a service called the UK Personal Loan Store. I haven’t used them personally so this isn’t an iron-clad recommendation, but what I do like is the fact that they will compare more than 250 loan plans before giving you their suggestions.

They also have links to the latest news on Personal loans, up-to-date info on Northern Rock’s Mortgages crisis, and other loan-related issues.

They will also give you the information you need about loan penalties that some companies take advantage of such as late payment charges, early redemption penalties and possible arrangement fees. They also let you know the advantages of Secured loans – if that’s what you need.

As with all things financial do your due diligence before agreeing to any contract. Best of luck!
