More Confessions of a Font Freak

I’m painting some signs for the upcoming Lone Star Round Up car show in Austin and wanted to mix up my stable of fonts. Found some great free ones at DaFont.com. Favorites are Sparkly, Brewsky and Dick Van Dyke. Search “retro” to get more classic styles.

Of course the most fun you can have with fonts is to modify them into your own style. I print out a sheet with the full alphabet, then paint or draw my modifications.

Get ISP Info

When you’re in need of an Internet Service Provider, usually the last thing you have a lot of is time. But if you’re just getting out of a contract with lousy service and poor uptime, you really can’t afford to pick the wrong provider.

You need GetISP.info. This site analyzes DSL, cable, dial up, satellite and wireless connections and gives you the results that will help you decide. Pick the type of access, speed and features you need and the site brings up the companies that offer what you’re looking for and helps you make comparisons.

But that’s not all GetISP.info offers. There are numerous articles that make all the aspects of life online easier to understand and overcome. Their information on how to block spam is right on. They even have a “brief” History of the Internet page that is interesting reading and may teach you a thing or two you didn’t know.

What To Do With Wine

OK, let the mocking commence for any and all reasons you find mock-worthy.

First off, there has never really been a problem in my house with leftover wine, but it’s best to be prepared you know. Second, yes, I do occasionally get tips from the Common Sense Community. (Whose link I’m not going to share because you’re being so mean. Go Google it or your own mean self.)

Anyway. In order not to waste a precious drop of wine do as my good friend Patti does:

“Freeze leftover wine in ice-cube trays and put them in freezer bags. When you need wine for sauces or casseroles, just pop in a cube or two. You can also make a quick, refreshing wine spritzer with a little soda water. Or, add wine cubes to your favorite party punch for a little pizzazz at your adult party!”

emphasis mine.

Help for Domain Addiction

Are you among the domain addicted? Be honest… how many domain names do you own? Do you know what VRE means? Have you flipped any virtual real estate?

There’s no arguing that creative domain flipping can be lucrative if you can come up with a decent name available at a decent price. If you’re looking for a domain name generator to help you brainstorm, give Nameboy a look.
Nameboy offers domain name creation, domain name lookup and domain registration, but the cool tool is absolutely free.

Enter a few keywords to find, register and back-order related available domain names. NameBoy will generate domain names based on the keywords you enter, and you can register or back-order them right here!

One option that I haven’t seen before in name generators is the rhyming selection. Never thought of that.

Copyright Help for the WebAddled

I’m no fan of the music industry and its stranglehold on “its” artists and their free expression, but copyright is something I do stand behind. The Web is all about sharing and freedom, peace, love and happiness, but somewhere in there we still need to respect the content creators in the morning.

Fair use. Citation. Quoting. Giving credit where credit is due. It’s not a hard concept and for the most part, if you do screw up and get overzealous with a creator’s work they’ll usually just write a note asking to remove their content before they go reporting you to the authorities. (Your service provider.)

If this happens, respect the request. If you can’t live without this content consider – gasp – offering them compensation. Barring that, ask if there’s a way you can work it out by citing, linking, something. If you’re not going up against the RIAA you’re probably not dealing with blatant flaming arseholes.

And should you find your own pearls of wisdom appropriated on someone’s site, try a civil discussion before you pull out the RPG. Most times, copyright violation is simply a lack of knowledge and not maliciousness. Of course, if the little offender doesn’t respect your request you are free to blast away.

Egregious thieves suck. A great place to learn more is Copyright Website.
